Sewing & Motor Skills Heart Card - Valentines Craft

Just like that, it’s the end of January and we’re already a whole month in to 2018. With February just around the corner, we’ve turned our attention to ‘all things love and friendship’ as we work on creating lots and lots of customer orders for Valentines Day gifts. If like us, you’re looking ahead to the 14th of February and are searching for a simple Valentines craft that’s quick and toddler-friendly, why not try making our sewn heart card? It’s a great activity for a parent or grandparent and child to do together, as well as providing an excellent opportunity for small hands to develop fine motor skills.

Only a few items are needed for this fun children’s craft:

A few sheets of white and coloured A4 card

Coloured pencils

String or wool

Hole Punch

Scissors

Sticky tape

Glue stick

Fold one of the sheets of paper in half and draw out a half-heart shape. starting and ending on the fold. Then, using the scissors, carefully cut out the shape from one end of the line to the other.

With the heart still folded in half, take the hole punch and make holes all along the outside (unfolded) edge, 1-2cm apart. When you open the heart out, you will have holes all around the outside, ready for sewing.

Cut a length of the wool or string and wrap a small piece of tape around one end. This will make it easier to sew. Thread the other end through the holes at the bottom and gently tie off to secure.

Take the taped end and sew in and out of the holes (either a running stitch or back stitch) all around the outside of the heart and ties off again at the end.

Fold another piece of card in half and use the glue stick to assemble the front, placing the sewn heart on the top face. Use the coloured pencil crayons to add a personalised note inside.

We hope you love this idea for a simple Valentines children’s craft. If you do, we’d love you to consider sharing it or saving it to Pinterest. Thank you!
