Sparks Christmas Crafts – Advent Wreath

This Christmas why not create this handmade advent wreath for a beautiful and artisanal feature above your table? We made this one with foliage from @nannasparks own garden plus only a few other small items and it was actually really simple to create. Here's how it was made.

You can use whatever foliage you prefer but for the main ring, we would recommend something with strong and flexible branches. We constructed ours from both Holly and Ivy branches before weaving in other greenery.

As well as the foliage you will need some string or twine and some Florist's wire. We bought some pre-cut wire pieces which made the job much easier.

You will also need some special tree candles which are approximately 10cm high and some candle clips to attach them to the wreath. We used these clips and these candles, which we were able to buy online.

Strip some of the larger leaves from the holly and ivy branches, then take up just some of them and begin to bend them round. Add more branches along the way to complete the circle and secure at a few points by wrapping some lengths of florists wire. Weave in the ends. Then take a few more branches and weave them around the circle, in and out of the branches to strengthen the wreath further.

Taking smaller trimmings from the other greenery, strip the ends of leaves and weave them into the wreath.

We placed heavier and longer pieces like these snow-berries at the sides so they would hang nicely below the ring.

Next, decide how many candles you would like on the wreath and attach the candle clips. Make sure the clips are fastened securely before fitting the candles inside.

Lastly, cut three or four long lengths of the twine and tie them securely to the wreath. be careful not to position them too close to the candles as you do not want them to be burned by the heat of the flames once they are lit. Then, you are ready to hang your advent wreath and light your candles.
